A UB spinout from Wenyao Xu, a professor of computer science and engineering, is using a cutting-edger AI use case to introduce an affordable and low-cost tool that diagnoses hearing loss.
Hearing loss in older adults can be a harbinger of more serious illnesses. A University at Buffalo spinout wants to give people a low-cost, accessible and effective way to diagnose hearing loss at home.
The company, Auspex Medix, was founded by Wenyaho Xu, a professor of computer science and engineering in UB's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Aspen was recently awarded a $252,550 grant from the National Instate on Aging to Advance the Technology.
Aspex is using its AI platform to develop a new hearing test that measures how a patient's pupils involuntarily change size in response to sound.
“Hearing loss is a widespread and often overlooked public health threat that can exacerbate cognitive and functional decline,” Xu said. “To combat this issue, we’re developing a low-cost, AI-powered tool that older adults can use at their own home to determine if they need additional medical care.”
